>Planet Terror/Death Proof – Opening Night

08 Apr

Mr. Rodriguez: big ups, best thing I’ve seen in months.

Mr. Tarantino: well played, although these “cameos” are getting a lot bigger. and they’re distracting. only part that let me forget about who I was watching was when your penis was falling off; this is not a good thing.

Overall, 3 hours that felt like 15 min.

    >Planet Terror was mind blowingly good. As for Death Proof take out all the overdrawn dialogue and you would have an amazing 10 minute short.

    >I would have to agree with you for the most although if it was a short not only would I not have been invested in these characters (really was more into the second set of ’em) but the pay off wouldn’t have been as hilarious. I just watched A.O. Scott and Roeper comment on these two films and I liked how they put it: Rodriguez parodied the Zombie Film genre but Tarantino created something inspired by the old films. I’m not saying one approach is better, just thought that was a good observation.I must say, though, it didn’t bother me one bit when Jungle Julie bit it cuz she was one annoying chica.

    >interesting. i couldn’t get into the characters at all. i just wanted them to die so they would shut up.yeah i’d agree with that roeper business. i think it was nice that they contrasted each other… its just his dialogue was 3/4 of the film and i found most of it to be drivel and him complaining about how the kids these days they don’t know all the cool movies he used to watch. i think if they would have played it first it could have been more effective.

    >No, I agree that the characters were grating, however if I didn’t get to know them as much as I did it wouldn’t have been as impactful when they died. I think this goes for whether you liked them or not. On the one hand you either despised them and their demise was all the sweeter or you were maybe somewhat interested in one or two of them and got a little taken back at their end.I just don’t think it would’ve been as good severely edited down…well unless maybe it wasn’t actually edited and just sped up like an episode of Benny Hill. You know, with the kazoo tune playing in the background…that would’ve been a great short :)
